Kunta Bay has been run by the Sanneh family since 1998. Three low buildings, a garden that takes two gardeners to keep, and forty metres of beach that we rake ourselves every morning before breakfast.
We are not a chain and we do not behave like one. The general manager is on site six days a week, the head chef has been here eleven years, and if you ring reception at three in the morning a person answers.
Most of our guests come from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Sweden between November and April, and from Senegal, Nigeria and Ghana for the rest of the year. Roughly half book directly with us rather than through an agent, which is how we prefer it.
What is here
Everything is a two minute walk from everything else.
The pool
Twenty two metres, salt filtered, open 07:00 to 22:00. Towels are at the desk by the steps and cost nothing. Loungers are never charged for.
The Palm Room
Breakfast 07:00 to 10:30 and dinner 19:00 to 22:30. Half board is $28 a person a night if you decide you cannot be bothered to go out.
Sandbar
On the sand, open 11:00 to 18:00 for grilled fish, salads and sandwiches. It closes when it rains, which between July and September is often.
The spa
Four treatment rooms, 09:00 to 19:00, closed Sundays. A 60 minute massage is $45 and reception books it.
The beach
Public, as every Gambian beach is, but the loungers and the shaded deck are ours and are for guests only.
The garden
Two hectares, about ninety bird species through the year, and a man called Modou who will tell you about all of them if you ask.
